ShoreTel 14.3 or ShoreTel 15

EDIT 30 July 2015: Check out my latest post on this subject here

The other day I was at an event with a ShoreTel distributor and we have a debate what is next ShoreTel 14.3 or ShoreTel 15. No one really won, but some interesting points came out.  Then being on my blog earlier today writing about the release of ShoreTel Mobility 8, I noticed I have been getting hits from people searching 14.3, so I thought why not do a quick blog and actually earn those hits!

So in my opinion what will come next, 14.3 or ShoreTel 15 (I have no insider knowledge on this):

  • It is unlikely that ShoreTel 14.3 will be released.  A lot of effort and time is being placed in to ShoreTel Sky and ShoreTel connect. I would expect ShoreTel 15 to be the unified platform, which joins ShoreTel Sky and ShoreTel UC together providing you with a hybrid solution so you can pick and mix which parts of your solution you want in the cloud and which part you want on premise.  However I do not think ShoreTel Sky will be fully rolled out in the UK at the point of this release.  This will give companies a great opportunity, they could put secondary services in the cloud for resilience or even move primary services out to the cloud like mobility to reduce the load on the WAN as most users will be remote anyway.
  • Another factor to why 14.3 is unlikely. Every 14 dot release has brought major functionality. So at 14.1 we got the Diagnostics and Monitoring and at 14.2 we got virtualisation. If 14.3 was going to be release, this would be the time to do it with the new functionality in mobility. However ShoreTel opted to provide this via a build release under 14.2.
  • I have heard a rumour somewhere (can’t remember where) that ShoreTel 15 will be release at the start of next year.
  • I think that there is a chance that the next major release will not be called Shoretel 15 as it will incorporate the cloud stuff as well. So maybe Shoretel Connect as they are building up this brand in the States at the moment.

As mentioned before this post is compiled of my opinions from watching ShoreTel over the last year, I have no insider knowledge. Any comments please use the comment field below.

I’m hoping for 14.3 to be released ASAP, as my company and others are experiencing a lot of annoying bugs in 14.2. At this point I could care less about new features, I want greater reliability in existing features. Because of my experiences with 14.2 I’ll only be upgrading to .3 releases in the future. Being on a dot release, I wouldn’t be able to upgrade to 15.0 anyway so there is no benefit for me there, but I can see ShoreTel focusing on it to bring in new customers.

You may want to upgrade to the latest build of 14.2. There were a lot of bugs in the early builds of 14.2.

      1. Hi Aj, Corey is right. Details of the latest release (1st Oct 2014) can be found here:

ShoreTel just released 14.3 though can’t see any build notes as yet.

    Sorry, build number is 19.43.7901.0

    1. Hi Mustafa, I have searched the ShoreTel support site and cannot see ShoreTel 14.3 or build 19.43.7901.0, Where are you seeing this?

The latest version I can see is ShoreTel 14.2 Build 19.43.4002.0

Peter, our ShoreTel partner downloaded it for us directly from the ShoreTel FTP server as it is not on their support site. I assume it will be “released” very soon?

    1. Thanks for the reply, I assume that your ShoreTel partner has been given access to this as they are working on a specific Support Request (SR) where this new code will fix the SR’s problem. Thanks for the update.

I may have jumped the gun. I just performed the upgrade and the build is still 14.2. The update should hopefully now include the fix for video calling with Windows 8 (8.1) via Communicator amongst other bugs.

    1. That is common for ShoreTel to release multiple build releases under a single version. Hopefully they will make it public. We have just run into an issue on a windows 8.1 machine today with video calling to a mobile device (using mobility). The windows communicator cannot take control of the camera! is this similar to your issues?

    • Mustafa on October 1, 2014 at 2:44 pm

Yes, that is the exact issue & we reported this to ShoreTel last year! We fought tooth & nail to prove it was not our environment and finally 1 year later we might just have a fix. Will know tomorrow morning hopefully. I question their testing methods before making releases and especially their time to solution. Seems to take forever and we’ve noticed this now for a number of years.

PS. Do go running towards the upgrade, it doesn’t fix anything. Just another dud upgrade with testing done by Stevie Wonder.

        Oops I meant *Don’t

      1. Hi Mustafa, Sorry to hear it didn’t provide the fixes you were hoping for. Silly question, but have you upgraded the communicator clients on the desktops as well as the server upgrades?

          • Mustafa on October 7, 2014 at 9:32 pm

Yes, both server & clients. Have escalated the issue now back to ShoreTel. The previous version .2005 worked for video after we were provided with an updated STVideo.DLL file. This new version was meant to have the fix as part of it but something is not right with it.
